About

A mobile open editorial meeting

ARKHENODE is a community programme of the 1st Maebashi International Art Festival 2026. Between June and December 2026 we hold nine sessions in all: four before the festival opens (Season 1) and five during it (Season 2).

ARKHĒ is ancient Greek for origin. It also sounds like aruke, the Japanese word for “walk.” NODE means a joint or a knot, and sounds like noudo, meaning density.

Each session runs about three and a half hours. There is no engine and no brake on the cart, so we take turns pulling it. Everything we find on the way is edited into a single zine.

  • Season 1 June–July 2026 4 sessions
  • Season 2 October–December 2026 5 sessions
  • Full edition of the zine Spring 2027

The zine

A Strange Mobile Stall Strolling Through the City

The prototype edition was published in Japanese in September 2026: thirty-two pages, free, handed to the guests of Season 2. The full edition follows in spring 2027.

The whole of the prototype — the foreword, the four sessions, the roundtable, the walking map and the column — can be read here in English, with the photographs.

The session records from Season 1 are available as PDFs, in Japanese only for now.

Rikako Kanazawa

SAN, Kamifuru

From central Niigata. After law school she worked on the magazine Tokyo Graffiti and then at the advertising production company amana. Returned to Niigata in 2021, after ten years away, to help start SAN — a hundred-year-old nagaya in the Kamifuru district turned into a mixed-use building. Opened the inn ODO above the Kamifuru shopping street in 2026.
